More to Kentucky than Derby!

More to Kentucky than Derby!

I received  a surprise trip to the Blue Grass state this past Labor Day.  It was my farewell to summer. Who knew that KY was so much fun and I didn't even go to the Derby.

Day 1: Making an Entrance...

Its was raining, the remains of Hurricane Harvey was still whispering her way across the midwest  when I arrived. It'd been a little over a year, since I had seen my longtime friend. We had not been  together since that time we drove across Ireland, but thats another story, for another day.

Instead of your usual last minute airport meal of McDonalds, they have a KFC waiting in the wings for you; where you can sit next to a plastic replica of The Chicken Man,  (ok I will not mention KFC again. ) The sky line is no Vegas, but its has that Louisville vibe letting you know you have arrived.

Day 2:  WorldFest...

There was a lot going on this weekend of Sep.1-3 besides WorldFest in Louisville; Market of Main, Friday After Five, and Summer Jam 3. We decided to go for WorldFest. The day held a slight chill so jackets were on the menu. We made our way downtown to mingle with the locals. The smells of delicacies being

cooked, BBQ'd, smothered, and fried goodness wafted over the crowd calling out to me. I love these types of events where I get to eat so many yummies in one place. The shopping was equally divining; from African prints to the handmade trinkets there was something for everybody. There was live entertainment, craft tents for the kids, and interactive culture display. The day ended in exhausted feet, eyes and stomachs and there was no mention of the derby.

Day 3: Doughnuts, Zip Lining and 70 feet drops...

I was introduced to the best doughnuts I have every tasted at,  Hi-Five Doughnuts in downtown Louisville. I experienced the glazed doughnut chicken sandwich with this amazing sweet and spicy sauce. Their doughnuts are yeasty fluffy greatness and the variety is spectacular.  It was worth getting up early in the cold mist. After breakfast we headed deeper into the Kentucky hills  for a full day of horseback riding, zip lining and a 70 foot static line drop.  Zip lining through the trees and mountains was refreshing, the weather was perfect and the staff at Mammoth Cave Adventures, were friendly. The

The horseback riding was quick. We didn't go far and it was up a rocky cliff which was a little scary. Nobody fell and that was a relief. Lastly, there was the 70 ft static jump. I was all about conquering this, I even bet my friends fiancé ( who is scared of heights ) that we would do it together.

We get to the top he decides to go first to get it over with and with out a second thought  after he was harnessed in he just stepped off the platform and jumped. So of course not to back down I let them harness me up and get to the platform and my body quickly reminded me that you should not be jumping form something this high. I backed out. I stood up there for at least 20 min. with my squad calling me out from down below.  First with encouragement that quickly turned to chicken clucks, I still was NOT jumping . I eventually slowly descended the stairs in shame. I talked so much crap that I was going jump and chickened out. I was so mad at myself, but I completed two out of three. I have vowed to defeat the tower on my return.  Until then....

Day 4: All good things come to an end...

An early morning flight ended my weekend get away in Louisville. I  have already started looking for flights for next summer. I experienced so many things and  unexpected joys there. So if you are planning a trip to Kentucky and those Derby tickets are sold out, don't fret; there is so much more to this beautiful state than just Derby!

On the Hunt,

Alexis
